Police name climber in Cuillins fall

Police have named a man who fell to his death while climbing on Skye.Neil Wylie, 34, of Carnoustie, Angus, suffered serious head injuries in the incident on the Cuillins on Friday.

A man has died after falling 150m from a Lochaber ridge.The unnamed 62-year-old died walker plunged from the Devil’s Ridge in the Ring of Steall at the head of Glen Nevis.

'No need for signs' in field where cows trampled woman

An expert witness told a court that a farmer was under no obligation to put up warning signs in a field where a woman was trampled by cows.Peter Pitchford was called by Cumbria farmer John Cameron’s legal representatives in the case in which company director Shirley McKaskie is claiming £1m in compensation after she was knocked unconscious by a herd of cows at Greystoke.Christopher Purchas QC, acting for Ms McKaskie, suggested that it was not a proper option to do nothing when cows with calves were put in a field in which there was a footpath.

Green bid for Botham's childhood site accepted

Campaigners battling to save the open ground where cricket legend Ian Botham practised as a boy have passed their first hurdle.Kate Ashbrook of the Open Spaces SocietySomerset County Council has told the Save Yeovil Rec group that their application to have the land registered as a green is in order.

A young woman was praised for getting herself off a Lakeland fell when she became lost.The 17-year-old, from the Eden Valley, became separated from her mother, with whom she was walking, on the summit plateau of Gowbarrow Fell, above Ullswater.

A Manchester climber missing in Pakistan was warned by fellow climbers that conditions were too severe to attempt a climb on the peak he was to tackle.Ben Cheek, 28, failed to return from a solo attempt of Shimshal Whitehorn in the Karakoram in the North of the country.

Rescue helicopters grounded by safety scare

Rescue helicopters in the North of England have been grounded following safety concerns.Both of the Yorkshire Air Ambulances and one of the Great North Air Ambulances are out of action after a potential fault was found in the McDonnell Douglas 902 series, which are also used by five police forces and helicopter ambulance services in London, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.Last week, the Great North Ambulance twice airlifted members of Patterdale Moutain Rescue teams to incidents in the Lake District, and took casualties to hospital.It is thought an internal fan system in the tail of the aircraft belonging to the London Air Ambulance developed a fault.

82-year-old walker airlifted after Lakes fall

An 82-year-old fellwalker was airlifted to hospital after suffering head injuries in a fall.The man, from Maryport, Cumbria, was injured on Rannerdale Knotts, overlooking Crummock Water, yesterday afternoon.

A climber was airlifted to hospital after a fall in a quarry near Bath.The man fell 25m (80ft) after completing his climb at Stoke Lane Quarry, injuring his spine.

Women taken to hospital after Snowdonia tent fire

Two women were taken to hospital after suffering burns when a stove set fire to their tent.The two 18-year-olds were camping at Llyn Cowlyd, north of Capel Curig, while on their gold-level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition.

TV pilgrim opens Dartmoor centre

A new information centre in Dartmoor was officially opened today by writer and BBC presenter Satish Kumar.Satish Kumar, right of picture, outside the new centreThe building, below Haytor Rocks on the eastern edge of the Dartmoor, has been built to have a low impact on the environment.  The centre, run by the Dartmoor National Park Authority, used local wood for construction and insulation made from sheep’s wool.A roof space has also been provided to encourage bat nesting.

Lakes crag man's identity confirmed

Lake District police have confirmed the identity of a man found at the foot of a crag in Buttermere.The body of Simon Bally was found on Tuesday at the foot of Striddle Crag on Fleetwith Pike by members of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team.
