Campaigners slam footpath ?gold standard?

A pressure group says Cornwall’s grading of footpaths is unacceptable.Despite having a legal obligation to keep footpaths clear, the county council’s new draft access strategy says some paths are ‘not needed for public use’.The Open Spaces Society (OSS), which campaigns for the maintenance of commons and rights of way, fears this designation will lead to the authority turning a blind eye to problems on those paths.

Foot-and-mouth: is the end nigh?

The Government’s top animal expert says farmers must continue to keep a close eye on their livestock, despite the news that a suspected case outside the original infection area proved negative.The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) yesterday lifted the control zone it had set up around a farm at Wotton, near Dorking in Surrey.

Reward after Borders eagle is poisoned

Conservationists have offered a £1,000 reward to help catch the poisoner of a golden eagle in the Scottish Borders.The female of the region’s only breeding pair was found dead and a search of the surrounding grouse moor found bait containing the banned chemical carbofuran.

Foot-and-mouth control zones set up round two new sites

Government officials are analysing samples from two new sites at the centre of foot-and-mouth scares after animals showed symptoms of the virus.A temporary 3km control zone has been set up around each of the premises, at Romney Marsh in Kent, and in Surrey, between Epsom and Esher.

Relatives of recently deceased mountain lovers have been told not to waste their time placing memorials on Britain’s highest peak.Any cairns or plaques placed to mark the lives of the dead will be removed from Ben Nevis.

GPS tracks Ingleborough cows

If you caught the Pennine episode of Griff Rhys Jones’s Mountain odyssey, you may remember the furry-eared cows being introduced to the karst landscape of the Yorkshire Dales limestone pavements in an attempt to preserve the delicate fauna of the area which sheep destroy with their ravenous feeding regimes.Well, the little cows have gone high tech and can now boast GPS sat-nav as they wander around the clints and grykes of the Dales.One of the cows wearing a GPS collar The herd of 50 Blue Grey and beef Shorthorn cattle now wears collars which use the Global Positioning System devices to record where they are, whether they are on the move and even whether they are grazing or not – talk about Big Brother.

Welsh police crack down on country crime

South Wales Police seized five off-road bikes and arrested a number of people yesterday in their continuing campaign against countryside crime.One of the arrests was in connection with possession of a bird of prey and the others concerned stolen vehicles.

Foot and mouth: it's back

The spectre of a British countryside out-of-bounds returned again today with the news that foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in cattle at a farm near Guildford in Surrey.Already, animal movements across Britain have been banned; the gathering of animals is restricted, as is dipping and shearing and all farms have been ordered to increase their biosecurity.
