Man dies after Scafell fall

A man has died after an accident on Scafell in the Lake District.The 59-year old, who has not been named, suffered serious head and chest injuries in the fall on Broad Stand, on the route between Scafell Pike and Scafell.Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) was called to the incident about 2pm.

Woman suffers head injuries in Lakes rockfall

A young woman was airlifted to hospital after fracturing her skull while scrambling in the Lake District.The woman, 17, was injured yesterday evening by a rockfall in a gully in Great Langdale while with a party of friends.

Peak access land 'open by weekend'

Jobs on offer at mountain council

The British Mountaineering Council has three vacancies, including one for an officer to oversee the introduction of a new climbing-wall qualification.The organisation needs a development officer to work promoting its work at climbing walls and working with other bodies such as Sport England.The BMC is also advertising for an experienced climber to organise its competition climbing events, as well as an administrator based at its Manchester office.Details of the vacancies are on the BMC website.  Closing date for applications is 25 May.

2,400 evacuated as weather hits Ten Tors

Young participants in the annual Ten Tors event had a torrid time at the weekend, culminating in a mass evacuation after torrential rain made conditions dangerous.Two Sea King helicopters were used as 2,400 evacuated the 400 teams of six young people from rain-swept Dartmoor.The Army and 700 volunteers worked throughout Sunday to ensure all the competitors were taken to safety.

Lakes fellwalker dies after collapse

A walker died in the Lake District at the weekend, after collapsing on a fell near Coniston.The unnamed man, from Grasmere, was pronounced dead by a doctor from the North West Air Ambulance service which was called to Holme Fell, where the man had fallen to the ground complaining of chest pains.11 members of the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team also attended the scene early on Saturday afternoon.
