Today is the momentous day when we shall all learn the name for the new Snowdon summit café.The Snowdonia National Park Authority is in the midst of demolishing the old Sir Clough Williams-Ellis-designed concrete bunker – once described by the Prince of Wales as Britain’s highest slum – to be replaced by a brand-new ‘visitor centre’.The National Park's Llinos Angharad said: “We're looking for something short, something quite catchy, something that would be easily remembered by everyone and also something that everybody can say.” grough hasn’t tested this on its younger staff, but how about: syphilis; or gonorrhoea.
Ramblers offer chance to walk off Christmas excess
The Ramblers’ Association (RA) is offering everyone the chance to get rid of the effects of one too many mince pies over the festive season.Its Festival of Winter Walks starts on Boxing Day and runs (or rather walks) until 2 January, so you can shake off the effects of your New Year hangover too.There are walks taking place across Britain: from Aberdeenshire to Cornwall; Norfolk to the Lleyn Peninsula. Frances Warneford, of the association, said: “Most of the routes are between four and seven miles.“Longer ones are generally arranged in a figure of eight format so walkers can stay for either the whole day or half a day.“More than 400 special strolls, many with a seasonal theme, are planned.
Scottish climber's funeral today
The funeral was taking place today of climber Neil Batchelor, who died after falling during a solo ascent on Cairn Gorm last Friday.The 26-year-old, from Inverness, died while attempting Aladdin’s Couloir on Coire an t-Sneachda.

A mobile-phone billionaire will join an Everest experimental medical team after donating £½m to the project.Former Phones4U boss John Caudwell will be part of the team climbing the world’s highest peak to study the effects of low oxygen levels on the human body.As reported on grough in August last year, the Xtreme-Everest expedition will consist of 40 doctors and 200 volunteers climbing the Himalayan mountain in March.

It looks as though the storm over the future the respected Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) has blown over.Both the voluntary-run MWIS and the official Met Office mountain-weather service will continue, following a meeting of the two organisations with the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) last Friday.There had been fears that Geoff Monk’s MWIS would cease providing its current forecasts if the Met Office stepped in.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) is warning climbers of access difficulties on a Peak crag.The owners of Eagle Tor, near Birchover in Derbyshire, have expressed concerns about the safety of their children playing in the area of the crag while climbers are on the rock.They also say human excrement and other litter have been found in the area.
Cave death inquest will be held next year
An inquest will be held next year into the death of a schoolboy in a caving incident.North Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service decided no charges would be brought after 14-year-old Joseph Lister died in Manchester Hole in Upper Nidderdale.The teenager, a student at Tadcaster Grammar School, was in a party from the Bewerley Park Centre, run by North Yorkshire County Council.
Climbers safe after Nevis rescue
Two Dutch climbers are safe after being rescued from Ben Nevis.Fifteen members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team mounted an eight-hour operation to rescue the pair, who became cragfast on Castle Gully.An RAF helicopter from HMS Gannet was also involved in the rescue of the men, aged 19 and 27.

This year’s Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon (LAMM) will take place on the weekend of 9-10 June.The 2006 event took place in Assynt, in the far North-West of Scotland.

Girl survives 500ft Glencoe fall
A ten-year-old girl survived a 500ft fall in Glencoe yesterday.Mountain rescuers said if she had been an adult, she would probably have died, but the fact she was small and supple saved her life.The girl plunged down a steep, grassy slope while descending Meall Mor, near Glencoe village.
