Torridon climbing victim's identity confirmed

Police have confirmed that the body found in Torridon is that of former mountain rescue team member Peter Grant.Mr Grant, of Balmacara near Kyle of Lochalsh, went climbing last Wednesday but was reported missing the following day.

Chiltern path signs go missing in theft

A stock of 76 signs which was to have marked a long-distance trail has been stolen before the notices were even installed.The waymarkers would have been put up on the 172-mile Chiltern Way circular walk, but went missing when a trailer was stolen.

Attacks on right-to-roam signs in Wales are damaging tourism and deterring walkers from areas opened up under access law.Damage estimated at £5,000 has been caused to signs in Carmarthenshire, which were placed to inform the public where they could use open access land.

A Scottish ski-range employee denied charges of endangering people’s lives yesterday.Kevin Byrne, an employee of the Nevis Range Development Company,  pleaded not guilty to the charge, and to causing severe injury and permanent disfigurement and to contravening the Health and Safety Act.

Man dies in Yorkshire canoe accident

A paddler has died after he became trapped on a weir on a Yorkshire river.The 37-year-old man was rescued by a specialist team from the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, but died in Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax.The man, from the Leeds area, got into difficulties while canoeing on the River Calder at Luddendenfoot.

Police name Torridon fall victim

Police have named a woman who died in a fall in Torridon.Weilin Wang, 24, of Caversham, Reading, Berkshire, fell into a gully on Fuar Tholl, near Achnashellach in Glen Carron on Monday.She was with a group of walkers when the accident happened.

Everest ban puts Fiennes charity bid in jeopardy

Eiger conqueror Sir Ranulph Fiennes’s bid to summit Everest is in jeopardy after Nepalese authorities acceded to Chinese demands to close the south side of the mountain.Amid rising turmoil over China’s occupation of Tibet in the run-up to the Olympic Games, Beijing last week banned climbers from the northern face and asked the regime in Kathmandu to do the same.

Mountain culture award for Hamish MacInnes

A mountain-rescue pioneer will be the first recipient of a new award, to be presented at the end of the upcoming Fort William Mountain Festival.Hamish MacInnes, the man who turned his mountaineering expertise to the invention of a new stretcher, the introduction of search and rescue dogs into his native Scotland and the production of a handbook on mountain rescue, will receive the inaugural Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.Dr MacInnes will be presented with the award at a ceremony on 23 February in the Lochaber town, which will include a DVD presentation detailing his achievements and containing testimonials from friends and fellow climbers.

Yorkshire rescuers help in Highland search

A fell rescue team from Yorkshire was in action today – in the Scottish Highlands.The team, which was training in the area, have joined forces from Tayside Police and a helicopter crew from RAF Lossiemouth searching for a missing 83-year-old man in Perthshire.George Borthwick was last seen in his back garden in Pitlochry at 7.45 this morning.

Gay climbers' group joins BMC fold

A lesbian and gay climbing club was among nine new organisations affiliated to the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) at its national council meeting yesterday.The London-based Not So Trad – Southern Lesbian and Gay Climbers’ Club was ratified as an affiliate, along with the Metropolitan Police Mountaineering Club and the Taunton Trailblazers.

Canavan leads Ramblers' protest walk

The Ramblers’ Association’s Scottish president has been hitting the trails this weekend.Dennis Canavan, a former MP and MSP, led a walk today to the Sauchieburn estate, where millionaire owner Bill Roddie is trying to keep out walkers, despite the right to roam granted by the Land Reform (Scotland) Act.And yesterday, he led a party of walkers on a brief, 30-minute stroll to demonstrate the health benefits of walking.

Search continues for 'confused' Ben Nevis walker

Rescue teams are searching Ben Nevis after reports of a man acting in a confused manner on the tourist path yesterday afternoon.A rucksack, believed to belong to the man, has been found, but no clues were found to his identity.
