New curbs planned for Dales green lanes

Yorkshire Dales authorities could restrict motor traffic on several green lanes in its area, to protect them from damage caused by 4x4s and bikers.The national park is starting consultation this week on plans to impose curbs on the use of recreational vehicles on eight of its unsurfaced tracks.

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland has revamped its website, with a new up-to-date look.Navigation is easier, and there’s a free map of Glencoe and Ben Nevis on offer to anyone who signs up for membership.

Nepal airport honour for Everest heroes

The Nepalese government has confirmed that the airstrip at Lukla will be renamed Tenzing Hillary Airport.Lukla airport, pictured by grough reader Denzil BroadhurstThe authorities also said they were looking for a suitable mountain peak to be named after the first Everest conquerors, and that the trekkers' trail to base camp would be called the Tenzing Hillary Trekking Route.Sir Edmund Hillary, who died last month, was instrumental in the setting up of the airstrip, the hairy approach to which is most trekkers’ and would-be summiteers’ introduction to the high-adrenaline world of the Himalayas.

Body found in search for former mountain rescuer

A man’s body has been found by rescue teams searching for missing climber Peter Grant.Mr Grant, a former member of the Kintail Mountain Rescue Team and the Search and Rescue Dogs Association, failed to return after a solo climbing trip in the south of Torridon.

Scots cable car company to face safety charges

The operators of the Aonach Mòr gondola face criminal prosecution following a serious accident 18 months ago.The Procurator Fiscal has advised the Nevis Range Development Company that it faces charges in relation to the incident in July 2006 in which one of the cable cars fell from the cable and plunged to the ground.

Walkers in the Peak District can now plug in their MP3 players and get a guided walk, free of charge.Accompanying maps can also be printed out at the download centre, which national park authorities say is only the second in the country.

Youth hostels across England and Wales are being modernised at a cost of more than £13m.Haworth youth hostel is among those to benefit from the extra cash Hostels at Ilam in the Peak District and at Pen-y-Pass in north Wales will see major revamps, with £2m spent on the former and nearly £1m on the Welsh site.

Outrage as housing development blocks footpath

Footpath campaigners say developers must rip up the foundations of a house which have been laid across a right-of-way.The footpath at Basingstoke The site, at Basingstoke, Hampshire, is on the path from Buckskin to Worting, and members of the Open Spaces Society (OSS) have expressed outrage that developers have blocked the path with fencing and destroyed the surface of the route.The housing development is at Old Kempshott Lane, on the town’s western side.

Caver stranded below ground after ropes removed

A man was stranded at the bottom of a 110m Yorkshire Dales cave after another party mistakenly removed his ropes.The caver, from Skipton, North Yorkshire, was reported overdue after a trip down the Gaping Gill system on the slopes of Ingleborough.

The body of a man missing for a week in the Highlands was found today by a member of the public.Cordell Thompson, a South African living in Reading, was reported missing by staff at the High Range Hotel, Aviemore, on Friday.

A hero of the mountains got the stamp of approval today.Search-and-rescue dog Merrick, a labrador-collie cross from Perth is the star of the Royal Mail’s 46p stamp, which is part of a series featuring working dogs.The Royal Mail stamp featuring Merrick The dog was head-hunted by the stamp’s producers when they spotted his picture on the website of the Search and Rescue Dogs Association (Southern Scotland).

Photographer will give Wainwright lecture

This year’s Wainwright Memorial Lecture will be delivered by photographer Derry Brabbs.Brabbs’s pictures illustrated several of Alfred Wainwright’s works later on in the author’s career, including Wainwright on the Pennine Way, Fellwalking with Wainwright and Wainwright in Scotland.Derry Brabbs The lecture, the sixth such, will take place at Rheged, near Penrith, on Saturday, 11 October.Previous speakers have included Cameron McNeish and Radio 2 presenter Stuart Maconie.

60 involved in rescue of injured Highland mountaineer
