Rescuers were called out to help a solo walker who became stranded on Striding Edge on Helvellyn in the dark.

Police alerted Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team about 5pm on Tuesday after receiving a call for help.

A team spokesperson said: “The walker had no lights and found himself on Striding Edge when it got dark and, with conditions being wintry, he was unsure about continuing on his own.

“The police had initially called out Keswick MRT who spoke to the young walker over the phone. After they had established his exact location and that he was parked at Glenridding they passed the call out to the Patterdale team.”

With an uninjured walker who just needed help to descend from the ridge, the team began a limited callout, with three Patterdale MRT volunteers setting off to walk up to the site.

“As the team approached the Hole in the Wall area just before Striding Edge they met the walker who had managed to move along the ridge by himself in the dark,” the spokesperson said. “He was assisted back down to the valley and dropped at his car.”
