Ruth Betts was reported missing in the Mamores

Rescuers searching for the missing hillwalker Ruth Betts have found a body.

Police Scotland said the discovery was made on An Garbhanach, north of Kinlochleven, about 7.15pm on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Formal identification has yet to take place but the family of Ruth Betts, 64, reported missing in the area, have been made aware.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Volunteers from Lochaber, Oban and Glencoe Mountain Rescue Teams took part in the search for the experienced hillwalker, who failed to return from an outing in the Mamores on Wednesday. Members of Search and Rescue Dog Association (Scotland), Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service and Police Scotland MRT also joined the operation to find the missing walker, with the Inverness Coastguard helicopter also joining the search.

A spokesperson for Glencoe MRT said: “Our thoughts are with Ruth’s friends and family at this time.”
