A walker has died after falling on a Glen Coe mountain.

The 74-year-old was reported missing on Saturday after an outing on Beinn a’ Chrùlaiste, overlooking the eastern end of the glen, near Altnafeadh.

Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by police about 7.30pm.

Freddie Rae, of Motherwell, had summited the 857m (2,812ft) peak and was descending when he fell, suffering fatal injuries.

Glencoe MRT said: “An experienced hillwalker, he had successfully climbed to the summit and spoken to his adult son at 3.30pm, but not returned by 6pm, and his phone had dropped off ‘find my phone’ from his son’s device.

“The team attended quickly after a call from Police Scotland, and located him shortly after embarking on a spread search in the area. Rescue 151 [the Inverness Coastguard helicopter] lowered their paramedic who confirmed that the gentleman was deceased. The helicopter was then called away to another tasking with Cairngorm Mountain Rescue

“Team volunteers recovered the deceased using our Can-Am Off-Road 6×6 back to the rescue centre in Glencoe where we were met by a private ambulance.

“Our condolences to the man’s friends and family. You are in our thoughts at this time.”
