A group of walkers was rescued after straying onto steep ground on a mountain in Eryri-Snowdonia.
The four young men from the Home Counties had driven to the national park on Boxing Day morning, for a few days’ hillwalking.
But at 6.10pm on Monday Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation received a call to say the men were cragfast on Tryfan.
Chris Lloyd of the rescue team said: “They had left the A5 road at 1pm to scramble up the famous North Ridge of Tryfan. This took longer than planned and with failing light and no summit in sight, they wisely turned back.
“However, they mislaid the route and strayed from the ridge line.
“Using the PhoneFind system, they were located on the East Face of Tryfan about half way up Nor’ Nor’ gully. Fortunately, the weather was reasonable and their torches could be seen from the valley.
“A party of five team members were dispatched with 150m of ropes and associated ironmongery, harnesses, lighting, additional clothing and hot drinks.
“Team members climbed the wet gully and located the four. Team members roped up each man to bring them to a point where one by one, they were lowered with a team member to the Heather Terrace.”
Rescuers walked the men off the mountain to the team base in the Ogwen Valley, arriving about 2.30am. The four were given hot drinks and mince pies before being taken to their car and given directions to Porthmadog.
Mr Lloyd added 2022 has been the team’s busiest.

29 December 2022This was pure stupidity. They were climbing ill prepared using Googlemaps on a phone and only had 2 head touches for 4 people. Hat off to the mountain rescue team for all they do. Its just a shame their boxing day was ruined by clueless people.
Wishing all the mountain rescue trams a happy new year. Thanks for all you do for us

03 January 2023Sounds more like youthful inexperience rather than pure stupidity. I'm sure they will have learnt from this situation.
