A young fellrunner has pledged to buy a compass after calling for help from a Lake District fell when she became disoriented in thick mist.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 3.15pm on New Year’s Day when the runner got into difficulties on Glaramara.
A team spokesperson said: “Unable to determine the way down and with low battery left on her phone she called for mountain rescue help.
“PhoneFind pinpointed her location on the summit and as she was getting cold she was advised to head north using the compass on her phone while a small team was mobilised to assist if necessary.
“Once the runner had dropped out of the cloud she could see the path and Borrowdale valley and called the team to say she was OK to make her own way down.”
Team members continued to ascend the fell to make sure she made it safely off the mountain in rapidly failing light.
The spokesperson said: “When the team met her near the base of Combe Gill, besides apologising and expressing her gratitude to the team, she added the first thing she was going to do is buy a compass.”
The incident involved six Keswick MRT members and lasted 1¾ hours.

06 January 2022Good that she apoligised and has learned from it.
I was caught in a hailstorm on Glaramara a few years back, not a nice situation to be in at all. Once visibility goes you are stuffed without a compass.
