An environmentally friendly process developed by insulation brand PrimaLoft has been commended by outdoors experts.
The company’s PURE renewable manufacturing technology scooped the Derryck Draper Award for innovation from the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild.
The organisation singled out PrimaLoft’s ‘Produced Using Reduced Emissions’ process for its annual award.
The technology reduces CO2 while manufacturing the synthetic insulation.
This year’s judges, Alex Roddie from Sidetracked magazine and Chris Townsend from The Great Outdoors magazine, said: “In recent years PrimaLoft has been a leader in developing recycled and sustainable synthetic insulation and fabrics.
“Now the company has turned its attention to the manufacturing process with PrimaLoft PURE, which results in 70 per cent CO2 savings. At a time when solving the climate crisis is crucial, this is a very praiseworthy breakthrough and a fine example to other companies.”
PrimaLoft, based in New York State and with offices in Xiamen, China, said the innovative PURE manufacturing technology has been a key focus for the expert development team at PrimaLoft, as part of the company’s continuing mission to be as sustainable as possible, without compromising its products’ performance.
The company said it also significantly reduces carbon emissions throughout its entire product range, by using recycled polyester instead of virgin fibres.
The award is named after one of the OWPG’s founders and past chairs, and is given to a member of the outdoor gear trade for outstanding innovation in outdoor equipment design and materials. This year’s award to was announced at the guild’s annual weekend and awards ceremony at Malham Tarn, in the Yorkshire Dales earlier this month.
Outgoing guild chair Peter Gillman said: “This is always a big occasion in the outdoor world.
“It was fitting to see PrimaLoft again take a deserved place among other winners for the company’s contribution to sustainability and uncompromised performance.”
