A group of Peak District rescuers are displaying their musical talents online in an effort to boost funds.

Kinder Mountain Rescue Team traditionally tours its home village of Hayfield in Derbyshire at Christmas to sing carols and raise cash.

The coronavirus has prevented the team running the event this year, so members have recorded their version of the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s festive favourite Fairytale of New York. The performance features in a YouTube video posted by the team.

A team spokesperson said: “The team have a wonderful Christmas tradition, for one night only every year, of visiting a few select venues in our home village of Hayfield in the Peak District, and treating the customers to what can only be described as a very unique carol singing experience.

“It’s so good that Noddy Holder was once moved to join us! Obviously we can’t do that this year, due to coronavirus so, instead, a few of our more musically skilled team members have recorded our version of that Christmas classic Fairytale of New York for your delight and delectation.

“A huge thank you to team Doctor Oli for putting this together and to the various musicians who contributed.”

“Coronavirus has made 2020 a challenging year for Kinder Mountain Rescue Team. We have had a record number of callouts as more people have taken to the hills. As a charity run by unpaid volunteers, we are funded almost entirely through public donation and it costs approximately £30,000 per year to run the team.

“Unfortunately, this year our funding has been reduced as many of our fundraising activities have been cancelled due to coronavirus.

“So we hope you will enjoy our little ditty and, if you would like to help us out with a small donation, we would be most grateful.”

The public can donate via the Kinder MRT JustGiving page.
