A couple were rescued were rescue from the Helvellyn range after getting lost in mist and being caught out by nightfall.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 5.10pm on Sunday when the pair called for help.
The young couple had made the ascent of Helvellyn from the Swirls car park, west of the mountain, with the intention of returning by the same route.
A team spokesperson said: “They took a wrong turn in mist and as it became dark and without torches they eventually dialled 999 asking for rescue assistance.
“As PhoneFind was able to locate them near to the summit of Raise it was only necessary to deploy a small team to walk the, by now, cold couple down to the road.”
Nine Keswick MRT volunteers were involved in the rescue, which lasted just under three hours.

01 December 2020It is easily done. The mist can drop very suddenely when you are on a mountain. I am glad everyone is back safely. Fabulous rescue team.

01 December 2020Idiots. Anyone ascending any mountain in winter needs a torch - together with map and compass skills. Product of this new generation who have been wrapped in cotton wool and think no harm can come to them

02 December 2020Have done Stridon Edge twice, once in mist which cleared suddenly while on the ridge - a party of definitely not seasoned walkers were thrown into a panic, some getting down on their hands and knees!! Last time I was up there, we got as far as the tarn and turned back, what’s the point in doing this beautiful climb in fog or darkness!!

02 December 2020Who would have thought it, mist and darkness on the last day of November. No torches either!

02 December 2020one of the problems these days is that most people who are new to this type of thing see no value whatsoever in learning even the basic skills of navigation and map reading. "what's the point when there's an 'APP' that tells you which way to go"
I'm not saying these two were lead astray by 'an APP' but this does seem the be the root cause for lots of callouts.
Pity the council don't put lampposts from bottom to top

02 December 2020It's easy to get things wrong? Yes it is if you don't realise you've gone up down, up again down again and finally up for a third time before getting to Raise when the Swirls route is DOWN from the summit.
Great job by Keswick mrt, yet again. Second incident like this reported on these pages in the last few weeks. I'm beginning to despair.
