Chris Smith failed to return from an outing above Glen Lyon

Police in Scotland said the body found on Thursday on the hills above Glen Lyon has been officially identified as Chris Smith.

Mr Smith’s body was found near Meall Garbh on the third day of a major search.

The 43-year-old GB mountain running team member had been reported missing last Tuesday after failing to return from a planned run over Meall na Aighean, Càrn Mairg, Meall Garbh and Càrn Gorm.

Police Scotland said there were no apparent suspicious circumstances and that a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.

Inspector Emma Bowman, of Tayside police division, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Chris’s family and we will continue to provide assistance and support to them.

“I would also like to thank everyone, including members of the public and the local community, for their support in sharing our appeals to help find Chris.”

Mountain rescue teams were joined in the search for the runner by a Coastguard helicopter. His body was discovered near the Glen Lyon munro at 11.50am on Thursday.
