Rescuers said a young climber was ‘remarkably lucky’ after surviving a fall on a Lake District crag with minor injuries.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said the 19-year-old’s helmet may have saved his life.

The team was called out shortly after 4pm on Saturday to Shepherds Crag in Borrowdale.

The climber fell 8m (26ft) from the MGC route and hit the ground, subsequently drifting in and out of consciousness after suffering a bang to the head.

A team spokesperson said: “Due to the nature of the injury air and road ambulance teams attended and treated the casualty.

“Keswick MRT packaged the man in a vacuum mattress and stretchered him to a road ambulance which then took him to the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle.

“Twenty-four hours later we received news that he had been discharged from hospital with ‘just’ bruises to his shoulder and a cut to the head. He was remarkably lucky.

“The climber gave us permission to share the photo of his helmet and this may have saved his life or prevented a life changing injury.”

The rescue lasted almost two hours and involved 16 Keswick MRT volunteers.
