A walker was airlifted from a remote hillside in the Cheviots after suffering a leg injury.

Northumberland National Park and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Teams were alerted by police on Sunday evening after the man injured himself while descending Cairn Hill.

A spokesperson from Northumberland National Park MRT said: “A small group of team members reached the casualty very early on and began providing medical attention, while additional members gathered lower down the valley, preparing to carry up their remaining equipment.

“Given the remote location and the potential for a very long stretcher carry, the team decided to request immediate helicopter evacuation. An HM Coastguard rescue helicopter from Prestwick was dispatched.

“As the sun set and the temperature dropped, team members continued to provide medical attention and shelter for the casualty, prior to the arrival of Rescue 199. It wasn’t long before the casualty was winched aboard the helicopter and flown to Borders General Hospital.”

Rescuers then accompanied the injured walker’s companion from the hill.

The incident was the teams’ 56th of the year.
