Two Lakeland walkers were led to safety after getting lost as night began to fall.
The couple called for help on Monday after finding themselves on rough ground north-east of Great Dodd in the Helvellyn range.
The pair were attempting a circular walk up Swirral Edge to Helvellyn, returning via Sticks Pass, but missed the turning to the east and ended up further north. They called for help as the light began to fade.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted and made their way to High Row above Dockray from where they made their way on foot to find the two walkers. They then escorted them down and returned them to their vehicle in Glenridding.
The rescue operation involved four team members an lasted two hours.

25 February 2019No criticism here, but amazement that, before light faded someone could miss the left turn at Sticks Pass.

26 February 2019yes that's quite an overshoot! Especially given that the path there is a walkers motorway. Having reached the top of sticks pass they just kept going north? Strange one.

01 March 2019Having trained a fair few people in navigation the basic problem seems that once 2 people start talking they continue to walk....walk....and walk. If they're in front navigating they can pass walls, gates, roads etc without thinking. I bet this is what happened.
