Mountain rescuers used their 4×4 vehicle to ford a river to bring an injured Peak District walker to safety.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 10am on New Year’s Eve when a 47-year-old man fell on Thorpe Cloud while walking with his family.

The man, from Ilkeston, suffered a suspected broken leg and ankle in the incident.

Team members gave the man pain relief and splinted his leg before using a rope system to lower the walker down the hillside on a stretcher.

A team spokesperson said: “He was then driven across the River Dove to the waiting land ambulance and handed over to the ambulance crew who took him to the Royal Derby Hospital for further treatment.”

The rescue was Derby MRT’s 70th of the year, a record number for the team.
