Three walkers were rescued in two separate incidents in the Lake District after getting caught out by bad weather.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, which was called out to aid the women, said one of the walkers was unprepared for the conditions and another was reported to be hypothermic.

The team was alerted at 12.20pm on Thursday to help a woman who became cragfast on Blencathra in strong winds. The 39-year-old was described as unprepared and too scared to move from her position near the summit of Atkinson Pike on Blencathra.

A team spokesperson said: “The team sent a Land Rover to Mousthwaite Comb from where, along with more members who had gone direct, they ascended the mountain.

“Two team members climbed up Scales Fell and the rest went to Scales Tarn and beyond to approach from the Mungrisdale Common side to maximise the chances of finding the casualty.

“The lady was found hunkered down by the summit cairn on Atkinson Pike. A group shelter offered immediate respite from the wind, rain and hail showers. She was given warm clothes then helped down the mountain back to her car.”

The rescue lasted almost 2¾ hours and involved 17 volunteers from the team.

As the rescuers were returning to base, they were alerted to two 24-year-old women on the Helvellyn range who rang 999 and reported one of them was suffering from hypothermia.

The pair were making their way from Great Dodd to Little Dodd in showery and windy conditions with poor visibility.

The spokesperson said: “The Land Rover team returning from a previous job went direct to approach via the Old Coach Road from St Johns in the Vale while a second team set off to approach from the Dowthwaite Head end of the Old Coach Road.

“The party was met descending at the back of Wolf Crag. They were given warm clothes and escorted back to the team vehicle and driven to their accommodation.”

Twenty Keswick MRT members, along with one member of Patterdale MRT, were involved in the rescue, which lasted almost 1¾ hours.
