A walker has died while scrambling on a route in Snowdonia.

The 40-year-old from south Wales was reported missing late on Thursday.

The woman, who had previously undertaken hillwalking in Snowdonia, left her guest house early, intending to scramble up on to Seniors’ Ridge from Cwm Idwal to Glyder Fawr.

She then planned to walk the ridge eastwards to Capel Curig.

Rescuers said she was sending information on her progress to a friend in the area, but then turned off her phone to preserve battery life.

Chris Lloyd of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation said: “She was reported overdue very late at night.

“While police made their enquiries, a plan was made to search certain areas in the daylight of Friday. The Glyder ridge is a large search area.

“She was known to be reasonably well equipped though had left her torch behind.”

Ogwen Valley team members were joined by colleagues from the RAF Valley Mountain Rescue Service and the Caernarfon Coastguard S-92 helicopter joined the search for the walker.

The woman’s body was spotted by the helicopter crew about 10am. She was winched onboard the aircraft and flown to the valley.

Mr Lloyd said: “She was found just below the Upper Cliff of Glyder Fawr which is high up between the Idwal Slabs and the Devils Kitchen at the back of Cwm Idwal. There have been a number of fatal incidents in this area over the years.”

The Ogwen Valley team was also called out on Saturday afternoon to the Rac boulders near the Dyffryn Mymbwr farm between Capel Curing and Pen-y-Gwryd. A young woman had injured her ankle in a short fall.

Mr Lloyd said: “The ambulance had been called, but due to high demand, the asked the mountain rescue team to attend.

“She was only 150m up a rough track.

“The team Land Rover was driven up to her. She was treated by a team doctor and paramedic before being driven to the road. From here she was taken by her friend to hospital for an x-ray.”
