A documentary following adventurer and climber Steve Backshall as he tackles one of his toughest challenges will screen on television this month.
Steve Backshall vs The Monster Mountain charts the presenter’s attempt on the North Face of the Eiger.
The show is due to be broadcast on CBBC, aimed at family viewers, and is likely to be screened later on BBC Two.
Backshall is joined in the programme by top British climber Leo Houlding.
The BBC said: “Steve knows it’s the team around him who will make all the difference as he sets out to realise his boyhood dream.
“Steve’s wife, double Olympic rowing champion Helen Glover, puts him through his paces as he strives to reach peak fitness in the months leading up to the challenge, while one of Britain’s greatest climbers, Leo Houlding, partners Steve as they train on Gogarth Cliffs in North Wales.
“But Steve must be ready mentally as well as physically if he is to achieve his dream of reaching the summit of the Eiger.
“After months of gruelling physical and mental training in the UK and Swiss Alps, Steve and his elite climbing team are ready to climb the mountain dubbed ‘The Ogre’. But they quickly discover that the vertical mile of treacherous rock isn’t the only challenge.”
The attempt on the North Face coincides with the arrival of a freezing weather system that brought havoc across Europe, including the UK earlier this year.
The BBC said: “Faced with brittle ice-covered cliffs, blinding blizzards and deep biting cold sweeping in with the Beast from the East, Steve finds himself pushed to the very edge of his ability.
“As a monster storm front moves in, heart-breaking decisions must be made in a race against time to save the expedition.”
Steve Backshall vs The Monster Mountain is scheduled for broadcast on CBBC at 5.30pm on Monday 14 May.

27 May 2018I HOPE WHEN I SEE THIS PROGRAMME THERE IS A MENTION OF THOSE WHO HAVE REACHED THE PEAK OF THE NORTH FACE OF THE EIGER.
My husband, Nigel Charles Robinson with Terry Ralphs did 28 years ago.
(My husband, known in the climbing world as Yorky, died climbing in Ireland in August 2017...)
In the last year of his life at the age of 62 he soloed over 100 extreme routes in Donegal).
He considered this more of an achievement that the Eiger.

06 June 2018Hi pat, your husband sounds like he was a real hard core climber but I don't doubt you know that. Those that have done these sorts of things quietly often turn out to be the best.
