A full mountain marathon kit is on offer for the competition winner

Outdoor brand Lifesystems is offering the chance to win a free entry to a mountain marathon, along with all the recommended gear to take part.

More than £1,750 of equipment and clothing is on offer in the Original Mountain Marathon tie-up.

Lifesystems said it is its biggest competition ever.

The OMM, which began life as the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It recently announced its main challenge will take place in north-western England, though the precise location will only be revealed shortly before the event.

Competitors in last year's OMM

The Original Mountain Marathon was started in 1968 by Gerry Charnley to test competitors’ abilities in the mountains. He wanted to set up a race that combined running, orienteering, hillwalking and an overnight camp, skills required for anyone entering the UK mountains.

This ethos of self-reliance means competitors are on their own to find a series of checkpoints and an overnight camp before returning on Sunday to the finish. With everyone on a different route the competitors are surrounded by 2000 others but have no-one to follow.

Organisers said: “The OMM race is a very real challenge. There’s no one to feed and water you or give you shelter.

“We want competitors to be prepared for their own race and that includes what they carry and what route they take. We provide a comprehensive, course-wide, invisible safety net around the competitors should they require it, but we want to put competitors at the mercy of their own decisions.”

On 28-29 October the Original Mountain Marathon will celebrate its 50th race. Details of the OMM are on the event’s website.
