Upper Wharfedale team members will marshal the challenge

Rescuers in the Yorkshire Dales are looking for walkers with stamina who are up for tackling a 22-mile route over three fells.

Participants’ aches and pains will be assuaged by the warm glow of knowing their efforts have helped the volunteer team that covers the area.

Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association is running its Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge for the fourth year, to help fund its activities. The route traverses Birks Fell, Buckden Pike and Great Whernside, with a total of 1,446m (4,744ft) of ascent.

For those who prefer a slightly less challenging outing, a two-peak walk is also on offer, taking in Buckden Pike and Great Whernside, with a distance of 13½ miles.

A third alternative involves a gentler 4½-mile valley walk.

The full Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge is also treated as a challenge run by many entrants, with the first to complete the course last year finishing in a time just over 3hrs 35mins.

A team spokesperson said: “The rescue team will be on hand to cheer you along and ensure you have an enjoyable and safe day. All proceeds raised go directly to the running of the team, which costs £45,000 per year.”

All three walks start in the village of Kettlewell, and free car parking is available for those taking part, who will also be fed a hot meal after completing their route as part of the entry fee.

The Grassington-based team undertakes searches and rescues on the fells and in the caves of the eastern Dales and beyond.

This year’s Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge will take place on Saturday 24 June.

More details are on the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association website, including entry fees and online registration.
