A woman who walks with the aid of crutches has completed a daring traverse of a knife-edge ocean headland as part of her fitness campaign.
Mountain expert Iain Miller helped Nikki Bradley make the trip along The Sturrall, an 800m-long promontory on the County Donegal coast in Ireland.
Ms Bradley has to use crutches permanently after radiotherapy and surgery for a rare form of bone cancer diagnosed at the age of 16.
She has had two hip replacements and uses exercise to overcome the pain her condition causes and to aid her rehabilitation.
She tackled the daring route along the headland, which rises to a height of 180m, roped to climber Mr Miller, who specialises in sea-cliff and sea-stack climbing. Treatment for Ewing’s sarcoma has left Ms Bradley with one leg 11cm shorter than the other, making even standing still a challenge.
The pair set off shortly after 11am on a November day and didn’t return to their vehicle until darkness was approaching. The challenge included a 10km trek, abseiling and rock-climbing along with negotiating dangerously narrow pathways.
Ms Bradley, who founded a fitness-based awareness campaign called Fighting Fit For Ewing’s, regularly participates in physical challenges to highlight the importance of exercise for rehabilitation. She has previously climbed the sea-stack An Port on the Donegal coast with Mr Miller.
She said it was ‘an absolutely brilliant day’ rated it as her toughest challenge in Ireland to date.
Mr Miller has posted a YouTube video recording Nikki Bradley’s progress along the vertiginous ridge high above the Atlantic Ocean.
More details of Ms Bradley’s campaign are on her website. Mountain Instructor and guidebook writer Iain Miller runs the Unique Ascent service based in County Donegal, north-west Ireland.
