Sock brand Wigwam has deconstructed its new Trailhead Pro model to provide four good reasons why you should choose its technical footwear over a standard pair of socks.
It said: “The first line of defence for your feet, the benefits of the right walking sock should never be underestimated.
“From moisture-managing fibres to high-performance constructions, a technical walking sock offers multiple benefits above and beyond standard socks and can make or break a day out on the hill. Featuring its patented Ultimax Pro technology for blister-free comfort, the new Wigwam Trailhead Pro incorporates all the essential elements of a great outdoor sock.”
The Trailhead Pro has a mix of technical fibres, Wigwam said. “Whether natural merino wool or soft, lightweight synthetics, technical fibres offer far greater comfort than standard cotton socks.
“The Trailhead Pro features a blend of hydrophobic, water repelling, and hydrophilic, water absorbing, fibres that effectively transport moisture from the foot’s surface. The addition of synthetic DriRelease Tencel ensures the socks remain dry and comfortable to wear for minimum risk of blisters or chafing.”
Stretch is a crucial element of a good outdoor sock, the company said, helping to ensure a secure fit and minimise any bunching or sagging that could lead to hotspots or blisters. “Wigwam’s Trailhead Pro features a combination of stretch nylon and stretch polyester which not only ensure a smooth and stretchy fit, but also enhance the socks’ durability.”
Most outdoor socks will incorporate specialist features that contribute to their fit and comfort. Wigwam said walkers should look out for mesh panels that enhance breathability, stay-put legs for a reduced risk of sagging and seamless toe closures that help reduce the risk of blisters or hotspots around the toes. It said: “The Wigwam Trailhead Pro socks pair a comfortable ribbed construction that will hug the calf comfortably as well as a seamless toe closure for minimised risk of chafing.”
Many technical socks feature extra cushioning, either underfoot, around the heel or all-around for maximum protection. As well as enhancing the comfort of your walking shoes or boots, cushioning can also help to reduce the risk of fatigue. Wigwam said its Trailhead Pro socks have an advanced construction with targeted cushioning at the toe and heel, this offers crucial comfort in these high-wear areas yet won’t reduce precision in tricky terrain.
The new Trailhead Pro socks cost £20 a pair. More details are on the Wigwam website.
