28 October 2015Why are they concerned?
I've had blood on my face a few times on the hill.

28 October 2015It was a complicated situation that we were confronted with. His head wound did not appear to require urgent treatment, but the man was clearly not in a good ‘place', and needed help. We sat and talked (listened) to him for about half an hour during which time it became clear it was not something we could deal with alone. I tried to think of a strategy for how best to get him proper help without risking triggering anything that could result in harm to him, us, or other members of the public. I decided to point him in the direction of Seathwaite, and then continue climbing to get a phone signal. We got phone signal just above Sty Head Pass, and began to descend as soon as we had contacted the police, hoping to catch up with the man (he was not moving particularly quickly). But going by the timings, and from what he’d told us, I suspect he saw the heavy police presence at Seathwaite and went back up to the hills. In hindsight there are things I might have done differently, but at the time we were thinking on our feet, and my prime concern was 'getting rid' of him (briefly, preferably) in order to talk a strategy through with my friend and call the police. I didn’t want to arrive in the valley with an unpredictable man and no plan. Unfortunately, communications in that area being what they are, I had two missed calls from the police which I was unable to return. I’m still trying to work out if the search is ongoing, and if any further information is needed from me, but the chain of communication is slow. I am anxious to find out what became of him.

29 October 2015I still don't understand why no one tried to help if they saw him harming himself. What did they do? Just watch?

29 October 2015If I saw a young six foot tall man harming himself, whether I intervened or not (as opposed to calling the Police) would depend on how he was harming himself, with what implement, and his apparent mental state while doing so. Just a thought.
