Behind the scenes, technicians and scientists have been working to reduce or remove the fluorocarbon chemicals used in many waterproofing treatments.

The problem is, these compounds are bad for the environment, so while we need to keep dry in the great outdoors, there’s a paradox in that the very garment we’re wearing could be contributing to the degradation of the natural world we’re in.

Enter Fjällräven, the Swedish brand that has eschewed fluorocarbons in its new Keb Eco-Shell range. An addition to the company’s more traditional range that uses G-1000 fabric, the new jacket and anorak lay claim to be some of the greenest outdoor garments on the market.

Fjällräven said the Eco-Shell range completes its collection of functional, durable and timeless equipment, pairing fully recyclable, mono-material constructions of new and recycled polyester with an eco-friendly and fluorocarbon-free, water-repellent impregnation.

“The concept of brutal simplicity guided the design of each Eco-Shell product – the result? Ultra-minimalist shell garments with clean lines and carefully designed features,” it said.

“Every zip, seam and pocket has been carefully considered and each has a specific purpose that adds to the products’ overarching functionality. The Eco-Shell jackets and trousers also feature a performance cut that has been developed to offer enhanced freedom of movement.

“This, combined with the soft and quiet nature of the fabric ensures that the garments gracefully follow your body movements for optimum mobility and comfort.”

The £390 Keb Eco-Shell Jacket is wind- and waterproof for year-round use in changeable weather conditions. It has drawcord hem adjustment and Velcro at the cuffs, YKK zips and YKK Aquaguard front zip with a rear storm flap.

The jacket has core ventilation which remains open when arms are hanging freely and provides access to pockets of internal layers. There’s a three-way adjustable hood with reinforced peak, two generous chest pockets with inner mesh compartment and MP3 compatibility.

Fjällräven rates water resistance at 30,000mm and breathability at 26,000g/m2/24h, which places the Eco-Shell jackets at the top end of performance.

The Keb Eco-Shell Anorak shares many of the same features as the jacket, and is also made from the new, sustainable Eco-Shell fabric. Fjällräven said: “Ideal for year-round trekking, the Keb Eco-Shell anorak offers unwavering functionality for outings across technical terrain in changeable weather conditions.”

The Anorak features a three-quarter length main zip and sells for £370.

Both come in sizes XS to XXL. More details are on the Fjällräven website.
