Many a future adventurer gets his or her first taste of the outdoors on the back of a parent.
Osprey, with decades of experience in designing rucksacks, has unveiled a child carrier it says offers unparalleled ventilation.
The Poco AG uses the brand’s AntiGravity 3D suspended mesh back system, seen in the Atmos and Aura AG pack series that hit the shops this year.
Founder and chief designer Mike Pfotenhauer said the AntiGravity technology is an especially good fit for the new Poco system: “With the AG back system the Poco can be switched between mum and dad offering unparalleled levels of ventilation.
“It’s easily adjustable compared to other back systems because there is less structure up against the body.”
The back system and floating child saddle are adjustable to suit both parents and child. Child safety is at the forefront of the design and this product has the Geprüfte Sicherheit mark from TÜV.
In warmer weather the suspended mesh zones in the parent’s back panel and child’s seating area maximise the load carrying ability, while providing high levels of ventilation.
Osprey said it’s also the world’s first child carrier to feature a fully-ventilated hipbelt.
The Poco has a range of design features to make life easier for both adult and child. The back length is easily adjustable for swapping between parents of different heights so they can share the duties carrying junior.
The baby harness is height-adjustable to accommodate growth, and there’s a buckle that’s more difficult to undo on the child harness, so there’s less chance of an inquisitive little one being able to escape it. There are mesh panels each side to aid baby’s ventilation.
The foot stirrups are adjustable and there’s a removable and washable ‘dribble pad’. The carrier is also hydration compatible
A raincover and SPF50-rated sunshade are included, so that you’re prepared for rain or shine.
The Poco comes in three versions. The Poco AG weighs 3.13kg and has a stretch pocket. It will retail at £220. The Poco Plus is £250 and has the stretch pocket plus a larger zipped lower compartment and twin zipped hipbelt pockets. It weighs 3.48kg. The top of the range Poco Premium will sell for £270 and has a removable 1.1l daysack, the zipped lower compartment, plus a scratch free sunglasses or electronics pouch, and the twin hipbelt pockets. It tips the scales at 3.77kg.
All three models fold up for storage. The new child carriers are due in the shops in spring 2016.
