A mountain rescue team discovered rubbish scattered on a hillside at the scene of a makeshift camp after it was alerted to flashing lights on the fell.
A member of the public rang the Wasdale team in the early hours of Sunday to say they had seen flashing lights on Harter Fell above Eskdale.
The Wasdale MRT leader decided to wait until first light before taking action as there was not enough information to instigate a callout of the team’s volunteers at 1.15am.
A team spokesperson said: “The team leader visited the location where the lights were seen and found an abandoned campsite, rubbish everywhere: cans, tent poles, yellow wellies and broken seats.”
There were also discarded empty beer cans.
The spokesperson urged anyone who had information about the incident to contact Cumbria Constabulary on 101.

27 July 2015It beats me ..if you carry everything in..then why not carry it out! If there had been some sort of necessity to abandon the camp then all items could have been placed in the tent, a note left to explain and certainly a return visit to retrieve the items! When I go out walking it astounds me the litter left behind...even in remote 'unspoiled areas'. Come on fellow hill walkers , tidy up behind you !

27 July 2015Absolute disgrace and an insult to the time given up by the rescuers. Go be dirty slobs in your own back yard. People like you get hikers a bad name. Shame on you

29 July 2015I doubt the people who did this will read your comment Andrea - they probably don't look on websites like Grough - that is of course assuming they CAN actually read in the first place!!!!!

30 July 2015I saw clearly deliberate littering on Corn Du, yesterday. It is astounding that people will even discard a bag containing rubbish just 100 metres up the track from garbage bins. They come to admire pristine wilderness and leave it like a garbage tip.
