A walker has died after falling from a crag while tackling a long-distance route.
The woman from Bolton in Greater Manchester was undertaking the Coast to Coast Walk when she fell about 18m (60ft) near Anglers’ Crag overlooking Ennerdale Water on Saturday.
Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 11.55am and went to the site, about 3km (2 miles) east of Ennerdale Bridge.
The walker suffered serious injuries in the fall. Rescue team doctors, a North West Air Ambulance Service doctor and paramedic treated her at the scene before a Sea King search and rescue helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey winched her from the site and flew her to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
A Cockermouth MRT spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, due to the severity of her injuries the lady didn’t survive. The team’s thoughts are with the casualty’s family.”
The incident involved 23 Cockermouth MRT members.
The team was also called out today when a walker suffered a suspected heart attack while on Haycock.
Another member of the man’s group of eight raised the alarm shortly after 5pm when his companion became ill near the 797m (2,615ft) summit of the mountain.
Cockermouth MRT members were joined by the North West Air Ambulance, which was able to land close to the incident site. The crew treated the man at the scene and he was airlifted to hospital.
A Cockermouth team spokesperson, which had 23 members involved in the incident, said: “Members of Cockermouth MRT met up with members of the casualty’s group as they started to descend back into the Ennerdale valley. Once in the valley they were transported to their vehicles in team Land Rovers.”
