A guidebook author and Mountain Leader is reviving a challenge walk in the Yorkshire Dales to help raise cash for charity.
Mark Reid will lead the Yorkshire Square Walk this coming weekend in a fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The 39km (24-mile) route takes in varied Wensleydale sights, including Middleham Castle, Leyburn Shawl, Redmire Church, Bolton Castle, Carperby, Aysgarth Falls, West Burton, Height of Hazely moorland pass, Coverdale, Braithwaite Hall and Hullo Bridge.
It was first devised in 1999 by the author, whose works include the Inn Way series. The weekend’s walk will raise funds for the charity, which provides nursing care for terminally ill patients.
Mr Reid said: “I know Wensleydale like the back of my hand and will guide you around this route whilst also sharing my knowledge of the area and its history, geology, heritage and culture, so that you can forget about navigating and concentrate on enjoying the walk and raising money for the fantastic work of Marie Curie nurses instead.”
Kyla Collins, local Marie Curie fundraiser said: “We are delighted that Mark has decided to revive the Yorkshire Square Walk, celebrating and taking in some of those fantastic views we saw during the Grand Départ and continuing the legacy of fundraising for our Marie Curie nurses in Yorkshire.
“All the money raised will support the local nursing services providing free hands-on care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes.”
Mark Reid has walked over 13,500 miles of footpaths over the last decade and also appears on ITV Yorkshire’s A Breath of Fresh Air series with weatherman Jon Mitchell, and has appeared on ITV1’s The Dales.
Anyone interested in taking part in the challenge can register via Mark Reid’s website. More details are available by contacting him directly on 07711 264019. Walkers can obtain a fundraising pack from Kyla Collins on 01904 755260 or by emailing her.
