Police warned that they will prosecute anyone found jumping from a bridge at a Cumbrian beauty spot.
Cumbria Constabulary said people leaping from Devil’s Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale are risking their lives and also breaking the law.
South Lakeland District Council introduced a bylaw forbidding the practice after numerous injuries and the death in 2012 of Urmston man Darrell Teal when he jumped from the ancient bridge into the River Lune.
Police fear the warm weather may tempt other visitors to repeat the practice.
Inspector Paul Latham, of the Kendal neighbourhood policing team, said: “There are a number of risks associated with jumping off a bridge including hitting rocks, misjudging the depth of water and sudden immersion in cold water.
“There is also personal responsibility people need to take to protect their own health and safety. It is an incredibly senseless and dangerous activity and I would ask anyone who is considering jumping to think about the risks and effects it will have on family should anything untoward happen.
“Jumping into any body of open water is dangerous due to the unseen hazards below the surface and the fact that, while it may seem tempting to cool off on a hot day, deep water is very cold, all of which can lead to injury or death.
“I also appeal to members of the public to contact us if you see people jumping off the bridge or even highlight the clear dangers to those jumping. Don’t risk your life for what is a quick thrill; it is worth so much more.”
Police added those successfully prosecuted last year were fined by the courts.

25 July 2014What are they going to do, had an officer manning the bridge at all times?
.....or is this a nicer arrest rate/conviction ratio to skew the stats than 'real' police work?

26 July 2014twisted my ankle walking in the woods last week, if only I had someone to warn me of the dangers as I left the car this terrible injury may not have happened. feel really let down by society, had to face the dangerous woods on my own and make my own decisions. Hopefully should get an OBE for my bravery though.

26 July 2014Is the incorrect spelling down to the illiterate fuzz or just shoddy journalism?

26 July 2014Well there goes our freedom! That hill is dangerous in rain, let's prosecute!!!
I can understand the reasoning, but surely, where will it end?
If they don't want people to jump, stick poles in the river or put barb wire on the bridge as per everywhere around where I live!
Common Law
27 July 2014Forgive me if I am wrong, but doesn't there have to be a victim in order for you to be punished for a crime?
Seems a bit like police forgetting their role in society yet again, we pay them to uphold the law, not create it!
