A walker had to be rescued from a Snowdonia mountainside after twice falling.

The man’s companion also slipped and injured himself but managed to make his own way off the hill.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation was called out about 4.15pm yesterday to aid the injured walker.

Chris Lloyd of the team said: “A party of two from Hampshire had been descending from Tryfan in drizzle and low cloud.

“They were skirting beneath Bochlwyd Buttress heading for the car park when one of them slipped on the wet grass injuring his shoulder.

“Despite this, he was able to continue to the car park where he met other friends. But his colleague also slipped on wet grass injuring his ankle.

“He too tried to continue but unfortunately misplaced his foot once more.

“He felt that he could no longer continue so he made the 999 call and asked the police to call mountain rescue.

“A hasty party of two was deployed to locate and treat the casualty until the stretcher party of about 12 members and new recruits arrived.

“The casualty was carried to the car park where his friends drove the two injured men down to hospital in Bangor for further examination and treatment.

“Both men, in their 40s, were reasonably equipped for a day on Tryfan. Both accidents were unfortunate.”

The team had been holding an induction day for four new recruits when two callouts came in almost simultaneously. Two senior fire officers from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were also visiting the team.

Mr Lloyd said: “As the stretcher party was just heading up to the Bochlwyd Buttress area, another call came for a man with leg injuries.

“They could see the Idwal Slabs from their location on the East Face of Tryfan.

“This party of six had gone up the North Ridge of Tryfan, but because the weather was poor with low cloud, poor visibility and drizzle, they decided to cut back down to Cwm Tryfan via the East face.

“The 34-year-old man slipped on a greasy rock and bounced a bit before landing.

“He appeared to have damaged his hamstring and could progress no further. He was put in a bivvy shelter with a colleague, whilst the others made their way down.

“A party of three team members and two guests made their way up to the casualty. Following the administration of analgesics, he was able to walk from the mountain.

“Another unfortunate incident due to greasy conditions under foot.”
