Areas of the Pennine hills will be transformed into huge art forms to celebrate the visit of the Tour de France to Yorkshire.
A vast planted grass mosaic and a continuous line drawing brought to life by local cyclists are among installations promised for the Fields of Vision project.
Local groups, schools and residents will be involved in sowing and cutting designs into a series of fields in the South Pennines during the spring.
Rural regeneration organisation Pennine Prospects, which is co-ordinating the plans, said the artworks will be visible from the sky and at ground level.
The idea was sparked by a suggestion from Worth Valley Young Farmers in West Yorkshire.
Pam Warhurst, chair of Pennine Prospects, said: “This huge land-art project brings together artists, young farmers, cyclists and the community to sew and weave original designs into the stunning South Pennines landscape.
“The installations will grow and flourish during the festival to really put the South Pennines on the map during the Tour de France 2014.”
The cycle race will pass through the area on 6 July and a Yorkshire Festival is being arranged, featuring almost 50 different projects to mark the visit of the event.
The festival, and its associated website, are being launched today.
