A mountain biker was airlifted to hospital after hitting a tree and knocking himself out.

The 17-year-old from Carlisle was cycling in woods next to the River Eden near Wetheral today when he hit collided with the tree.

He suffered arm and leg injuries and was concussed in the incident.

Penrith Mountain Rescue Team joined ambulance staff, fire and rescue service members and the crew of the Great North Air Ambulance Pride of Cumbria at the scene about 1.50pm.

The biker was treated at the scene by a GNAA doctor and paramedic before being stretchered to the helicopter and flown to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

The three-hour rescue involved 13 members of the Penrith MRT.
