Three walkers were rescued after getting lost in the dark on a 3,000ft Lake District fell.

The group called for help from Broad Crag, the neighbouring peak to England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike yesterday.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 5.05pm and 17 volunteer members were involved in an operation lasting more than 5½ hours.

They were found on the summit plateau of the 934m (3,064ft) fell, given warm, dry clothing and walked down Lingmell Nose to Wasdale Head.

Rescuers said conditions on the mountain tops were windy and wintry.
