Paul Brown at the new bridge

The author of a long-distance route in Yorkshire said his successful pressure led to the reinstatement of a missing footbridge.

Paul Brown devised the White Rose Way, a 167km (104-mile) walking trail starting in the West Yorkshire city of Leeds and ending at Scarborough in North Yorkshire.

Mr Brown, who published his guidebook to the walk last year, said: “Following much lobbying on my part, the long missing footbridge over Barlam Beck north of Stamford Bridge has finally been replaced this summer.

“East Riding County Council together with Full Sutton and Skirpenbeck Parish Councils granted permission for the new bridge to be named the White Rose Way Footbridge and this was officially opened at a naming ceremony recently.”

Mr Brown said the walk starts in Leeds’s City Square and goes via the outdoor film set of Emmerdale, through the Harewood Estate and then on to Wetherby, Boston Spa, Tadcaster and an ancient countryside Roman road to Fulford at York.

The trail continues through Kexby to Stamford Bridge, following the River Derwent into the Howardian Hills area of outstanding natural beauty to Malton, then Thornton-le-Dale.

The walk then enters the North York Moors national park, passing through Wykeham and Dalby forests before Harwood Dale and reaching the North Sea at Cloughton.

A clifftop, beach and headland walk then completes the trail, finishing at the South Bay at Scarborough.
