Compression clothing is widely used by sports enthusiasts, with various claims of enhanced performance and reduced fatigue.
Now, German brand Falke has unveiled its new walking socks that use the same principle.
Falke said its new socks are specifically designed for hillwalkers.
It said: “The TK Energizing Wool is a class-2 compression sock with a technical wool and synthetic fabric construction.
“The term class-2 compression refers to the effect wherein the pressure exerted by the socks causes the arteries within the calf to exert their own counter-pressure, which in turn allows for greater blood flow, carrying with it a larger amount of oxygen, and thus greater oxygenation of the musculature.
“The results of this are calf muscles that remain energised for longer, and tire much less easily.
“The additional benefit of this gradual compression is its ability to stimulate the veins in order to counteract venous reflux, a common circulatory issue where blood can pool in the legs, causing varicose veins and other blood-flow related complications.
“For walkers the benefit is a supportive pair of comfortable socks, which help to alleviate both cramp and muscle fatigue that can be common when covering long distances.”
The TK Energizing Wool socks will retail at £40 a pair and are 38 per cent merino wool, 38 per cent polyamide, 12 per cent polypropylene and 12 per cent Elastene.
Falke said additional benefits come from the materials used in the construction: merino wool affords both warm and next to skin comfort as well as odour management properties that are a boon when worn day-in, day-out.
The synthetic elements both serve to wick away sweat, quickly and efficiently, promoting dry, comfortable feet that are less prone to blistering and irritation as a result of the additional friction that can occur as a result of excess moisture.
The TK Engergizing Wool socks are due in the shops next year. More details are on the Falke website.
