The organisation that runs youth hostels in England and Wales has appointed mountaineer Alan Hinkes as its first ever ambassador.
Mr Hinkes will promote YHA in the education and outdoor adventure fields.
He is the only Briton to have climbed all 14 of the world’s highest mountains over 8,000m and is also a regular user of YHA’s hostels.
The North Yorkshire-based climber and outdoors enthusiast is the first ambassador for the charity in its 83-year history.
Chief executive Caroline White said: “We particularly wanted to ensure that ambassadors understand and had a connection with YHA so that they can speak authentically about us.
“Alan was the natural choice. He is well respected and a role model in the field of outdoor adventure. His role as ambassador, I believe, will open many doors for YHA.
“I am delighted Alan has agreed to become an ambassador for YHA.
“In the outdoors arena he is well respected and equally well known and to have him associated with our brand is an honour.
“His personal accomplishments, coupled with his charitable work with youth-focused and outdoor charities, are an excellent fit with YHA’s mission to inspire all, especially young people through new experiences of adventure and discovery.”
Mr Hinkes said: “YHA was an influence in my early hillwalking trips and staying in youth hostels helped me get out into the hills for adventure.
“In my role as ambassador I hope to encourage more people to use youth hostels and get out into fresh air in the hills.
“Exercise is important and youth hostels are well-placed and well-priced for a convenient stay in the countryside, for families and people of all ages.”
Mr Hinkes was appointed an OBE in the 2006 New Year’s Honours and is one of an elite group of less than 30 climbers who have summited all the world’s 8,000m mountains.
During the last five years more than £20 million has been invested in YHA’s network of around 160 Youth Hostels throughout England and Wales.
