A youth is critically ill in hospital after falling 15m (50ft) into a Cumbrian gill.
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was alerted yesterday and the Great North Air Ambulance scrambled after the incident in Dufton Gill.
The Pride of Cumbria helicopter was scrambled at 7.30pm and joined the Penrith team in the rescue.
The air ambulance crew and an ambulance paramedic treated the youth at the scene and a doctor from the British Association for Immediate Care also joined the operation.
The injured youth, who suffered life-threatening injuries to his head in the fall, was anaesthetised at the scene and members of Penrith MRT stretchered him from the gully and to the helicopter.
He was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for further treatment.
