Two climbers were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after falling from a crag in the Lake District.

The pair were on Black Crag in Great Langdale today when the incident happened.

Rescuers were alerted and Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was called out, along with the Pride of Cumbria aircraft of the Great North Air Ambulance, the North West Air Ambulance and a Sea King search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland.

Rescuers went to the scene shortly after 2pm and both climbers were treated by a doctor and paramedic from the Pride of Cumbria for multiple injuries including head, chest and pelvis injuries.

The men were winched into the Sea King and flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne.
