Wintry conditions over the weekend in the Peak District saw one mountain rescue team invited to a party.
The Edale team received a plea from a pub landlady to rescue her six-year-old granddaughter’s birthday celebration as she was stranded by snowdrifts.
The team happily saved the day for the licensee of the Shoulder of Mutton in Bradwell by delivering the food for the girl’s party on Saturday afternoon.
The following afternoon, Edale Mountain Rescue Team was contacted by Derbyshire County Council’s emergency planning staff to say three families in holiday cottages on Bradwell Moor were snowed in and running out of food and other supplies.
Martin Gorman, the team’s press officer, said: “After collecting a significant amount of shopping from DCC, we got as close as we could in our Land Rovers before we had to abandon the vehicles and carry the supplies the last 2km on foot through deep snow driven by strong winds.
“The families had a number of small children with them and were very pleased to see us.”
The Edale team’s busy weekend began on Friday night with the rescue of motorists on the main A619 road between Chesterfield and Baslow. Team members used two of its Land Rovers to reach drivers and vehicle occupants stranded by the snow.
Mr Gorman said: “After several hours digging, towing and transporting drivers, Derbyshire Police asked the team to assist Buxton and Derby MRTs with a similar situation on the A515 near Newhaven.
“On Sunday, the team was out again assisting yet more drivers on the higher roads throughout our area where strong winds had caused significant snow drifts, completely blocking the road in many places.”
He added that the team remained on standby as the wintry conditions continue towards Easter.
