A mountain rescuer went to the aid of three men in a 4×4 after they got stuck on a high-level Yorkshire Dales route.
Police contacted the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation on Wednesday after the men reported their Mitsubishi Shogun was trapped in ‘deep’ snow.
The vehicle was stuck about 500m (1,640ft) high on the Coal Road, which links Dentdale with Garsdale Head.
A CRO spokesperson said the vehicle was about a mile beyond Dent railway station in snow 15cm (6 inches) deep.
The spokesperson added: “A local team member attended in his own Land Rover Defender, pulling their vehicle free quite easily.”

21 March 2013Six inches? who says size doesn't matter. One up for the Rover.

21 March 2013Not surprised. The Shogun I had recently couldn't escape a 4-in mud-rut and crabbed along until it ran out of rut.

21 March 2013You can rely on a Land Rover; but any 'so-called 4x4' still needs appropriate winter tyres to cope. The skinny 'ballet shoe' type of tyres are useless on any vehicle.
As I saw in an other post, will the Police be covering the cost of that 'call-out' or is it just a cheap way to get their responsibilities covered.

24 March 2013One up for the Land Rover. But a 4WD not only needs proper tyres and capability, but a capable driver.
Too many people drive much too fast in bad conditions, given a false sense of security by the four wheel drive. But as soon as they touch the brakes, they are no different from other vehicles, except of course they are 50% heavier and going 50% faster.

24 March 2013Dave B, totally agree.
