The family of a woman whose body was found in the North York Moors national park after a major search has thanked mountain rescuers and others who looked for her.
A member of the public found Barbara Colling’s body on Wednesday after she had been reported missing on 28 January.
The disappearance of retired teacher Ms Colling, who had dementia, sparked a huge search involving Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team, national park rangers, search and rescue helicopters and members of the public.
A mountain rescue team member was airlifted to hospital after slipping and injuring his back during the search.
Lizzy Firmin and Rob Colling, Ms Colling’s children, said: “We have been left devastated by the tragic loss of our mum and will miss her terribly.
“We would very much like to thank mountain rescue, the rangers, the RAF and all of the volunteers who gave up their time and were involved with the search for mum. Their efforts are deeply appreciated.
“The support the local community has given the family has been wonderful and a great comfort.
“We would also like to thank the police officers for their thoughtfulness and support during a very difficult time.”
An inquest into Ms Colling’s death was opened and adjourned on Friday. A full inquest will take place later.
