Ben More, scene of the rescue

Police have pleaded with hillgoers to think carefully before heading for the Scottish mountains after two people were rescued in a night-time operation on a munro.

Central Scotland Police said walkers should be properly equipped and experienced in the light of a series of serious incidents recently.

The force was contacted yesterday about 4.20pm by two people in difficulty on Ben More in the southern Highlands.

The man, aged 25 and a 21-year-old woman, both from Lancashire, rang for help from the 1,174m (3,852ft) mountain near Crianlarich.

A Central Scotland Police spokesperson said: “A Royal Navy helicopter was deployed but was unable to rescue the party due to the extreme weather conditions in the area at the time.

“The party was located by the Killin Mountain Rescue Team about 9.15pm, and was safely brought off the hill by 11.55pm.”

The spokesperson said the pair were uninjured, adding: “There have been several serious incidents in the Scottish mountains over recent days and weeks.

“We would urge anyone considering visiting the mountains to carefully consider their actions, ensure they are properly equipped, experienced and aware of what to do in the event of difficulties.”
