A caver had to be rescued from underground after collapsing in a Yorkshire Dales system.

The 70-year-old man was in the Sell Gill Holes caves when he experienced medical problems yesterday, Sunday.

Members of the Cave Rescue Organisation were alerted shortly before 2pm and went the man’s aid, at the entrance pitch to the Fossil Route in the cave system near Horton in Ribblesdale.

He was treated at the scene then hauled 9m to the surface before being stretchered to a waiting air ambulance which flew him for further treatment.

The rescue was the Clapham-based rescue team’s 64th of the year.
