Time was when the hillgoer just needed a pair of gloves to keep his or her hands warm and dry.
But with the increase in use of gadgetry such as mobile phones and GPS units by outdoor enthusiasts, conventional gloves are a barrier to easy use of electronic gear in the great outdoors.
Outdoor brand Helly Hansen has responded to the need to protect hands from the elements with two new glove models, featuring the ability to operate gadgets without removing the gloves.
The Norwegian brand said: “Helly Hansen understands the importance of innovations that help you keep your finger on the pulse, leaving you free to enjoy your time on the slopes.
“This winter, the brand has launched two new gloves, featuring On Tip Smartphone technology that enables you to answer your phone, text and email, adjust your MP3 player or use any touch screen device without exposing hands to the freezing elements.
“The Softshell Glove and the Enigma Ski Glove have been manufactured using On Tip technology, providing fast-as-fingers sensitivity when using any touch screen device.
“On Tips have been strategically placed on the ends of the thumb and forefinger of each hand. The On Tip material and its specific placement enables visual alignment of the tip to the keypad, whilst the thumb tip makes swiping the screen easy.”
The Enigma Ski Glove has Primaloft insulation and a protective gaiter for warmth and comfort, while its leather palm helps to keep grip steady. Helly added: “The On Tip Softshell Glove is a great fitting winter glove that provides solid weather protection and freedom of movement.”
The On Tip Softshell Glove retails at £55 a pair and the Enigma Ski Gloves cost £80.
More details on the company’s products are on the Helly Hansen website.

24 September 2012These look similar to the North Face 'E-Tip' gloves. If they are then they work ok on gadgets which have touch screens, but aren't much use for general electronic devices without touch screens.
