Ultrarunner Steve Birkinshaw has won the Dragon’s Back Race, which ends today in south Wales after a gruelling route over the mountainous spine of the country.
The five-day race, which has only been run once before 20 years ago, is among the most challenging in the world.
The Cumbrian-based Newcastle University research associate was first home at the finish at Carreg Cennen Castle in the Brecon Beacons.
Helene Whitaker, one of the winners of the original Dragon’s Back, was first woman to finish the 2012 event.
The field of runners set off on Monday from Conwy Castle in north Wales.
Berghaus athlete Birkinshaw is a seven-times winner of the Original Mountain Marathon elite-class.
