Leading international rockclimber Adam Ondra will make an appearance at a climbing festival dubbed ‘down-to-earth and friendly’ by one of its main sponsors.
The event, in the Sicilian resort of San Vito lo Capo, also hosts mountain biking, kayaking, trail running and a mountain film festival.
US climbing and outdoor brand Black Diamond is sponsoring the event in October and the Czech climber, also sponsored by the brand, will be a star attraction.
The festival, at the small resort on the island’s north coast, will also host the first Black Diamond Night Trail, a race is in the dark on the Monte Monaco.
The 5 km night race starts on the beach and ends on the summit of Monte Monaco, with headtorches available from the sponsors.
Adam Ondra will show his latest film at the festival and will also participate in the event.
Christian Lehmann of Black Diamond said: “The festival and the climbing areas in Sicily are still an inside secret and people who have always wanted to get to know a new region should come visit us in San Vito
“The festival is down-to-earth, friendly and relaxed; the participants live for the sport they compete in and the region is phenomenal.”
The cliffs around San Vito lo Capo offer first-class climbing with more than 600 routes in all grades of difficulty and steepness in pristine limestone.
The climbing festival brings together the climbing community from throughout Europe. There are workshops for beginners, climbing competitions for amateurs and also the Top-Marathon for advanced climbers.
The mountain bike discipline brings together pleasure riders and those obsessed with racing. A race will take place on the demanding trail in the Golf of Cofano.
The coast of San Vito is also renowned for kayaking, with wild sections of coast, fjords and bays. The festival has two kayak events: the sea kayak race and the Kayak Raid, a guided tour in the Golf of Cofano.
